Dagestan head Sergey Melikov is “moving to another job,” Vladimir Putin said.
“The term of the current head of the republic [Dagestan], Sergey Melikov, expires in September. He has done a lot. And we are grateful to him for that. But he is moving to another job, life goes on,” he said.
“Representatives of Dagestan” proposed that Putin nominate Fyodor Shchukin, chairman of the republic’s Supreme Court, for the post of regional head. Magomed Ramazanov, deputy envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District, will become prime minister. Putin supported this decision.
As the BBC notes, Putin usually appoints acting regional heads himself and does not hold public meetings.
Expected resignations. Earlier, media outlets wrote that as part of another round of the “governor fall” ahead of the State Duma elections, Bryansk Region Governor Alexander Bogomaz, Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, and Dagestan head Sergey Melikov could lose their posts. The latter called himself a “soldier of the supreme commander-in-chief,” Vladimir Putin, and said he “will be where he orders [him] to be.”
Floods in the North Caucasus. In the spring, Dagestan was flooded at least twice, and there were fatalities. While local residents cleared debris and searched for missing people on their own, the authorities explained the deaths as the result of the victims’ own “carelessness.” More details here.
Elections-2026. Alongside the State Duma elections in September 2026, Dagestan is also expected to hold an election for the head of the region, who is chosen by the regional parliament.
