The Petrogradsky District Court of St. Petersburg imposed a 1 million ruble fine on TPO Red Media, a company within the Gazprom-Media structure that operates a network of cable and satellite channels. The information was released by the St. Petersburg courts’ press service.
The case stemmed from the broadcast on Kinomix of Cloud Atlas by sisters Lana and Lilly Wachowski with a 16+ age rating. The company was prosecuted under Part 2 of Article 6.21.2 of the Russian Code of Administrative Offenses, which concerns showing minors materials containing what the law describes as “non-traditional sexual relations.”
The court did not specify which scenes in the screen adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel prompted the complaint. The film consists of six interconnected stories set in different time periods. One of them follows a young composer living in the 1930s who exchanges letters with his lover.
A lawyer for Red Media asked the court to reduce the penalty and set the fine at half the statutory minimum. He said the company had faced staffing problems after relocating to St. Petersburg.
The defense said that “after the move to St. Petersburg, many employees resigned, which created a difficult situation.”
The report also notes that only Moscow addresses are currently listed on Red Media’s website. At the same time, the EGRUL legal entities database shows that the company was re-registered in St. Petersburg in late 2025, at a business center on the Petrograd Side.
