The Southern District Military Court sentenced Gashim Kardashov, a resident of Dagestan, after finding him guilty in the case involving the hostage-taking of his former wife and her sister. According to the court’s press service, he was given 10 years in prison.
Under the ruling, the first two years of the sentence are to be served in prison, with the remainder to be spent in a maximum-security penal colony.
Kardashov was tried under paragraphs “v,” “g,” and “zh” of Part 2 of Article 206 of the Russian Criminal Code, which concerns the hostage-taking of at least two people using weapons and violence.
Investigators’ account
According to the investigation, on August 8, 2025, the man entered a store in Dagestan carrying a weapon while his ex-wife and her sister were inside. The case materials say he then beat both women with the butt of a shotgun, locked the entrance door, and threatened to kill them.
Investigators say Kardashov demanded that the prosecutor and the head of Dagestan come to the store. He reportedly intended to discuss with officials a court ruling issued in response to his former wife’s lawsuit.
Cause of the dispute
The ruling had stripped Kardashov of the right to use the home where he had lived with his wife before their divorce. As stated in the court press release, he voiced his demands during a call to emergency services at 112.
The verdict in the case was announced on June 29, 2026. The materials had reached the court on April 21.
