A Zaporizhzhia regional court created by the Russian authorities has sentenced a resident of occupied Dniproprudne, born in 1962, in a treason case. The man was given 12 years in a maximum-security penal colony, according to a statement published on the court’s website.
The court’s press service said the criminal case was based on a money transfer allegedly made in support of the Ukrainian army. The publication does not give the man’s full name and identifies him only by the initial “I.”
According to the court’s online case database, only one treason case involving a person with a matching surname has been filed there over the past year. That case concerns Vitaliy Ilyin. The database of the project “If There Had Been No War” also says he is a 63-year-old pensioner from Dniproprudne facing such charges. According to that project, he was detained in December 2024.
Investigators say that in September 2023 Ilyin received Russian citizenship and began receiving a Russian pension, while Ukrainian pension payments continued to be transferred to him as well. They allege that in June 2024 he used a Ukrainian banking app to send 1,000 hryvnias to an account linked to the AFU. The court’s statement says this was equivalent to 2,107 rubles.
In addition to the main sentence, the court imposed one year of restricted freedom. The “If There Had Been No War” project also says Ilyin has health problems, including stomach and duodenal ulcers as well as hypertension.
