During the night of July 19, one person was killed and 16 others were injured in a massive Russian strike on Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said it was one of the largest attacks Russia has carried out against the Ukrainian capital.
According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, five districts of Kyiv were hit: Solomianskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Desnianskyi, and Dniprovskyi. Fires broke out in residential and non-residential buildings, and several cars also caught fire.
Kyiv authorities said the blast wave damaged the above-ground entrance of the Lukianivska metro station. The station was subsequently closed.
In the Bucha district of Kyiv region, the emergency service said fires broke out at warehouses and at a “logistics facility.” Preliminary reports said two people were injured there.
A separate incident was reported in the Zaporizhzhia region, where a Russian drone struck a passenger train. Ukrzaliznytsia, the Ukrainian railway company, said passengers had been evacuated in advance. A train attendant reportedly sustained minor injuries.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that Russian forces had carried out a large-scale missile and drone strike on Ukraine. The ministry said the targets were defense industry enterprises and logistics centers in Kyiv and the surrounding region, as well as infrastructure at the Port Yuzhny in Odesa region.
The command of the Ukrainian Air Force said Russia launched a total of 41 missiles and 125 drones of various types at Ukraine. Ukrainian officials said 23 missiles and 10 attack drones hit their targets. Kyiv was described as the main direction of the attack. Ukraine says Russian strikes on the capital have intensified since early July and are now occurring several times a week.
