President Donald Trump announced that U.S. special representative Steve Whitkoff will travel to Russia on either August 6 or 7, according to an AFP report.

Trump provided no further specifics about Whitkoff's Moscow trip but separately remarked that Russia "could choose to halt civilian casualties"—a move that might prevent additional sanctions against Vladimir Putin.

The president also confirmed that two nuclear submarines, deployed following a heated online exchange with former Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev, have arrived at their designated location. No further details were shared about their mission.

Whitkoff has made at least four prior visits to Russia—in February, March, and twice in April. His most recent discussions with Russian officials touched on reviving direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv.

In late July, Trump issued a 10-day ultimatum (expiring August 8) demanding Russia cease hostilities in Ukraine, warning of sanctions and other consequences if the deadline passes unmet.
