Argentina considers launching a “golden passport” program for investments starting at $500,000

Argentina is preparing a citizenship-by-investment program, Financial Times reported on June 27, citing sources. According to the newspaper’s interlocutors, an Argentine passport could be obtained either through a non-refundable donation of about $500,000 or by purchasing government bonds worth $1 million.

FT’s sources said the terms of the initiative are not yet final and could still change. Argentina’s Economy Ministry, which is responsible for the program, declined to comment.

The newspaper says the authorities expect the so-called golden passport program to help the country direct tens of billions of dollars toward debt payments in the coming years. If approved, Argentina would become one of the largest countries in the world offering citizenship in exchange for investment.

According to FT, an Argentine passport allows visa-free travel to nearly 170 countries. The newspaper notes that this is more than any other passport currently available through investment schemes.

After Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine began, Argentina became one of the destinations for relocation. Against that backdrop, the country tightened its migration laws in 2025. FT says those changes were made in part to pave the way for a citizenship-by-investment mechanism.

The report also notes that in recent years European countries have instead started winding down their own golden passport programs. The European Commission had urged EU member states to revoke citizenship previously granted under such schemes to Russians and Belarusians.
