The Riga District Administrative Court has reversed the National Electronic Media Council's (NEPLP) earlier ruling to cancel Dozhd TV's broadcasting license, according to LETA news agency.
This comes after a lower court had initially supported the media regulator's decision. NEPLP chairman Ivars Abolins announced plans to challenge the appellate court's verdict.
The license withdrawal in December 2022 followed controversial remarks by Dozhd journalist Alexei Korostelev during a broadcast, where he expressed hopes about assisting Russian military personnel. Additional grounds for the revocation included the channel's display of Crimea as Russian territory and its reference to "our army" when discussing Russian forces.
Dozhd later secured a Dutch broadcasting license in early 2023. The network's leadership indicated they would not pursue reinstatement of their Latvian license due to anticipated lengthy legal proceedings.
