The US Department of Commerce required Anthropic to restrict access for foreign governments, companies, and private individuals to the company’s most advanced AI models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5. This is stated on Anthropic’s website.

Washington said these models will be subject to government export controls. According to Axios, the decision was made after an unnamed company allegedly managed to bypass restrictions on one of the models. This raised US concerns over possible national security risks.

Anthropic said that in order to comply with the requirements, it was forced to completely disable access to Mythos 5 and Fable 5 for all customers. The company called the situation a “misunderstanding” and said it is working to resolve the problem.

The US government’s requirement was issued just a few days after Anthropic unveiled the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, which, according to media reports, the company presents as leading on a number of industry benchmarks.

🔵 Anthropic’s conflict with Washington . Anthropic and the Trump administration are already involved in litigation over an order that bans US government agencies from using the company’s AI tools.

🔵 Context . In early June, Anthropic called for slowing the development of artificial intelligence because of the high risks posed by the technology. Experts assessed the call to “freeze” the race ambiguously: critics believe this could help the company cement the leadership it has already achieved.
