Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced preparations for negotiations between Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He made the statement in a post on his Truth Social account.
Trump explained that organizational matters began being worked out after his phone call with Putin. The call took place alongside consultations with Zelenskyy and representatives of European states at the White House. According to Axios, the meeting could take place in August of this year.
A three-party negotiation format involving Trump himself is not ruled out in the future. Coordination with the Russian and Ukrainian sides has been assigned to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President JD Vance, and Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Discussions with Zelenskyy and European counterparts also addressed the issue of providing Ukraine with security guarantees involving the EU and the U.S.
"Everyone is enthusiastic about the prospect of establishing PEACE between Russia and Ukraine. <…> This is an important first step toward ending the nearly four-year military conflict," the American politician noted in his post.
