The ceremonial event took place the day before in the city of Newport, located in the state of Rhode Island. The decision to induct Sharapova into the Hall of Fame was announced by American tennis player Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam tournament champion.
Among those present at the ceremony was Maria Sharapova's father, Yuri Sharapov, an honored tennis coach of Russia. During the event, he was unable to hold back tears.
