The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, Igor Krasnov, has submitted documents for the vacant position of Chairman of the Supreme Court. This was reported by the news agency TASS, citing a statement by Nikolai Timoshin, head of the Higher Qualification Board of Judges.

Timoshin confirmed: "The Board has received an application from the Prosecutor General of Russia, Igor Viktorovich Krasnov, expressing his readiness to assume the position of Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation."

The vacancy arose following the death in July of the former Chairman of the Supreme Court, Irina Podnosova, who passed away from an oncological disease.

Earlier, the publication "Vedomosti," citing five informed sources, reported that the key contender for this position was considered to be Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Investigative Committee, whose term expires this week.

On August 21, the Higher Examination Commission canceled the qualification exam for candidates for the position of Chairman of the Supreme Court due to the absence of applications.

On the same day, the Telegram channel VChK-OGPU, citing its own sources, published information that Krasnov had become the main candidate instead of Bastrykin. According to the channel, the exam scheduled for August 21 was canceled due to public outcry, after which Krasnov's candidacy gained an additional advantage: on August 22, he was awarded the title of Honored Lawyer of the Russian Federation, which exempts him from the need to take the qualification exam.
