Nepal's Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced his resignation amid mass protests triggered by the social media blockade. This is reported by India Today and Reuters.
According to Kathmandu Post, the head of government and cabinet members are being evacuated from their residences using military helicopters. The reason for the evacuation is cited as arson and acts of vandalism targeting the homes of high-ranking officials.
The international airport in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, is closed, with over 300 military personnel deployed on its premises. According to India Today, Nepalese ministers are soon planned to be brought there for evacuation.
Kathmandu Post also reports that the army has been deployed to guard the parliament building.
Earlier that day, the Nepalese government lifted the ban on social media, which was introduced last week and sparked widespread protests resulting in 19 deaths.
Protests against corruption and the authorities' decision to block over 20 social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, X, and Reddit, took place in Kathmandu and other cities of Nepal on Monday, September 8.
