Yevgenia Khasis, convicted for the murder of Novaya Gazeta correspondent Anastasia Baburova and lawyer Stanislav Markelov, has been released after spending 16 years in prison. This information was disseminated by RIA Novosti, based on materials from the criminal case.

As the agency clarifies, Khasis left the women's correctional colony in Mordovia in the summer of this year. At the end of August, administrative supervision was imposed on her.

Novaya Gazeta journalist Anastasia Baburova and lawyer Stanislav Markelov were shot and killed on January 19, 2009, in the center of the capital, on Prechistenka Street. At the time of the attack, they were walking after a press conference organized in support of one of the participants in the anti-fascist movement.

In November 2009, Nikita Tikhonov, one of the leaders of the Combat Organization of Russian Nationalists (BORN), and his domestic partner Yevgenia Khasis were detained on suspicion of committing this crime. In 2011, the court sentenced Tikhonov to life imprisonment and Khasis to 18 years in a colony. Later, her term was reduced to 17 years.

Another BORN leader, Ilya Goryachev, was recognized as the organizer of the murder of Baburova and Markelov. In 2015, the court found him guilty of organizing five murders, forming the extremist community BORN, and storing weapons without a permit. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment.
