In the Kamchatka Territory, authorities have announced a potential complete internet shutdown due to large-scale work being carried out by Rostelecom, scheduled from September 25 to 29.
As stated on the regional government’s website, the telecommunications operator will be upgrading the coastal infrastructure of the "Sakhalin-Kamchatka" submarine fiber-optic line in the Ust-Bolsheretsky District. The work is expected to take 48 hours, but its duration may be extended due to complex hydrometeorological conditions in the coastal area.
The regional government clarified that during the internet outage, all critical facilities—banks, stores, services, and institutions—will use satellite communications. Authorities have also held consultations with business representatives on this matter.
"We are making every effort to ensure that major retail chains do not lose internet access. Relevant work has already been done with 'Shamsa' and other retailers. <…> I can confidently say that residents will not face food shortages, even if they forget to withdraw cash in advance," noted Yulia Morozova, Chair of the Kamchatka Government.
