On October 4, local self-government elections are being held in Georgia, as reported by the NewsGeorgia agency.

The country's population is to elect the heads of 64 cities, as well as over 2,000 representatives to municipal councils. In the capital, Tbilisi, nine candidates are running for the position of mayor.

Voting began at 08:00 Georgian time (07:00 Moscow time) and will conclude at 20:00 (19:00 Moscow time).

As the publication notes, eight opposition groups, including the party of former President Mikheil Saakashvili, the "National Movement," are boycotting the elections, considering the current government illegitimate following the 2024 parliamentary elections.

According to "Echo of the Caucasus," in 26 cities and municipalities, the elections are uncontested: only representatives of the ruling party "Georgian Dream" are registered for the mayoral positions.

A protest action is planned for the evening in Tbilisi, which some of its organizers refer to as a "peaceful revolution." Georgian Prime Minister, leader of "Georgian Dream" Irakli Kobakhidze, has warned the organizers and participants of the action about possible criminal prosecution in case of violations of the law.
