Flooding has resumed in Dagestan; a residential building collapsed in Makhachkala due to inundation

A major flood has struck Dagestan again, a week after the previous one. Water inundated the streets of Derbent, mudflows descended onto a federal highway, and a market was washed away in Khasavyurt. A state of emergency has been introduced in Makhachkala. RusNews writes about this.

According to media reports, a residential building collapsed in Makhachkala after its foundation subsided because of the water. Three apartment blocks are under threat of collapse, and cracks have appeared in the walls of at least four buildings. There were no injuries, the Emergency Ministry told TASS. The prosecutor’s office has launched an inspection.

A total of 139 localities in the region were left without electricity, and in Makhachkala sewage treatment facilities were shut down because of this.

The Health Ministry has begun mass vaccination against hepatitis A in the flooded areas. Doctors urged residents to use only boiled or bottled water for drinking and cooking.

At the end of March, a large-scale flood hit the North Caucasus: in Dagestan and Chechnya, houses, roads, bridges, and cars were swept away, and thousands of people were left without electricity, heating, and communications. The authorities were unprepared for the disaster.
