In the Afghan city of Herat, protests began several days ago after new restrictions on women were introduced. In response, the Taliban used force and sent military equipment into the city. AFP and Reuters reported this.
Shortly before that, the authorities had published a new set of rules for women. In particular, it included a ban on the use of cosmetics, as well as a requirement to wear socks and face masks. After that, according to the UN, at least 30 women were detained during a raid in Herat. Some of them were later released.
These detentions triggered protests. As the UN stated, security forces opened fire on the demonstrators. At least two people were killed, including a child, and more than 20 others were injured. After that, according to AFP, the Taliban deployed armed security personnel and equipment in the city. As a result, residents canceled further planned protests.
Local authorities deny reports of detentions and the use of weapons against protesters.
