At the start of 2026, British researcher Adrian Shine, who had spent more than half a century studying the Loch Ness monster legend, said he no longer believed Nessie existed and viewed many sightings as waves caused by boats. Against that backdrop, attention has again turned to Russian lakes that have generated similarly persistent myths.
Specialists say such stories are often tied both to the physical nature of the lakes and to human perception. Social psychologist Valentina says that in darkness and uncertainty, the brain tends to identify living beings in vague shapes because that mechanism is linked to survival.
Labynkyr and Kitezh
Lake Labynkyr in Yakutia is known for accounts of a large creature allegedly appearing on the surface. Geologist Viktor Tverdokhlebov, after a 1953 expedition, wrote about some kind of animal with a massive body seen in the water. Scientists and tourists later traveled to the lake, but found no proof of a monster. In 2016, an expedition by the Russian Geographical Society carried out a dive there in conditions ranging from -46 outside to +2 in the water.
Lake Svetloyar in the Nizhny Novgorod region is linked to the legend of Kitezh, a city said to have gone under water during Batu Khan’s invasion. In the 19th century, the site became a destination for Old Believer pilgrims. Geologists later explained the lake as a karst collapse, but no archaeological traces of the city were found.
The Blue Stone and Kara-Kul
On the shore of Lake Pleshcheyevo lies the Blue Stone, a boulder weighing about 12 tons that had been revered since pagan times. Legends say it sinks into the ground, disappears into the lake, and then returns to the shore. Researchers link this to seasonal soil movement.
Kara-Kul in Tatarstan, whose name is translated as “black lake,” gave rise to stories about a creature called su ugeze, or “water bull.” It has been described as a serpent, a horned animal, or a giant fish. One explanation is that the myths are reinforced by the dark water, the lake’s karst origin, and its unusual appearance.
