During a Ukrainian drone strike on the Moscow oil refinery in Kapotnya on June 18, the Euro+ oil processing unit was damaged, according to sources cited by Reuters. The unit includes an AVT-6 primary crude distillation facility with nominal capacity of 140,000 barrels per day, equal to 47% of the plant’s primary refining capacity.
The sources said auxiliary equipment, storage tanks for crude oil and petroleum products, pipelines, and secondary units were also damaged.
The refinery’s main primary oil-processing unit was hit, and it is one of the plant’s two key elements supplying feedstock for commercial fuel production at other units, Sergei Vakulenko of the Carnegie Eurasia Center told Agenstvo.
The report says the refinery has two AVT units. The first one, accounting for 53% of the plant’s capacity, was also damaged in the previous Ukrainian strike on the facility on June 16. After that attack, the Moscow refinery suspended operations.
Reuters sources said the plant had planned to restart the Euro+ unit by the middle of the week and had been processing crude at about half capacity while the AVT-6 damaged on June 16 was under repair.
The Moscow refinery supplies fuel to the capital and is considered critical for the region. After the two attacks, the plant is believed likely to remain shut down for at least several days.
