The Kremlin says air defenses performed “effectively” during the drone attack on Moscow and points to Russian strikes on Ukraine

Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the massive Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow on June 18 was, in the Kremlin’s view, connected to Ukraine’s “difficult situation” on the front line. He made the remarks to reporters at a briefing, according to Vesti.

Peskov also spoke of what he called the “high performance” of Russian air defense systems during the attack. He said Ukraine’s actions did not indicate a willingness to negotiate.

“Look for more footage from various cities in Ukraine. The footage is impressive, showing the results of strikes by our armed forces. These strikes will continue,” Peskov said.

He added that, in the Kremlin’s assessment, Ukraine is “continuing its line,” and that the situation for the Ukrainian side at the front is allegedly approaching catastrophe. Peskov said this was what lay behind the strike on the Russian capital.

According to the source text, about 200 Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow and the surrounding region on June 18. It says this was the largest attack on the Russian capital since the start of the full-scale war.

The attack damaged the oil refinery in Kapotnya. In the Moscow region, reports said 17 people were injured and an eight-year-old girl was killed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the strike on Moscow a fair response to Russian attacks. The article says he had previously stated that if Ukraine burns, then Moscow will burn as well.
