Russia is not expecting the agreements that Russian authorities say were reached at the summit between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Anchorage to be carried out. That was stated by Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov in comments to Vesti correspondent Pavel Zarubin.
“We are not waiting for these understandings or agreements to be fulfilled; we are waiting for victory. We are waiting for the realization of our own goals,” Ushakov said.
According to him, one side remains “committed” to the Anchorage agreements, while the other “turned out not quite able to go its part of the way and fulfill the agreements.”
After the Putin-Trump meeting in Alaska on August 15, 2025, Russian officials began using the phrase “the spirit of Anchorage”. They used it to describe unspecified arrangements that were said to have been reached at the talks.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, when asked what the phrase meant, said it referred to “a whole range of understandings” between Russia and the United States.
However, since the beginning of 2026, Russian officials have spoken about those arrangements in a more critical tone. In February, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Russia had accepted U.S. proposals on Ukraine after the Alaska summit, but that Washington itself was now not ready for them. Later, Lavrov also said that “the spirit of Anchorage is evaporating.”
