Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that postponing the State Duma elections scheduled for September 2026 is not being discussed. According to him, preparations for the campaign are ongoing, and the election has already been called by presidential decree.
“Preparations for the elections are underway. They have been announced by presidential decree,” the Kremlin spokesman told reporters, according to TASS.
Earlier, Meduza, citing two sources close to the Russian presidential administration, reported that the heads of the FSB and National Guard chief Viktor Zolotov are trying to persuade Vladimir Putin to postpone the parliamentary vote.
One source told the outlet that talk of a postponement, which in practice would amount to canceling the election in the near term, first emerged in spring 2026. According to the sources, two main arguments are being used to support the idea: a worsening economic situation and declining approval ratings for United Russia.
At the same time, one of the sources stressed that the discussion remains informal and has not moved into a practical stage.
“There are no documents on the president’s desk, and there may never be any,” the Meduza source said.
According to the publication, security officials are continuing to lobby for postponing the election. Meduza’s sources also say the idea gained more traction after Ukrainian attacks on Moscow.
