Russia’s Ministry of Justice has added three Harvard University entities working in the social sciences to its registry of “undesirable organizations.” The ministry said so in a notice published on its website.
The list includes the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, a Harvard research center focused on Russia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the broader Eurasian region. The center brings together students, scholars, and experts working on the politics, history, economics, and societies of these areas.
The center also runs a master’s program in regional studies covering Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.
The registry also now includes the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University. The institute was established to promote Ukrainian studies in the United States and beyond. It conducts research, teaching, and publications on Ukraine, primarily in the humanities and social sciences.
The third entity is the Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard University’s school of public administration. It trains specialists in public policy, government, international affairs, and leadership.
In addition to the Harvard entities, the registry now includes the Center for Independent Social Research.
According to the article’s background section, since 2023 the “undesirable” registry has expanded to include at least eight Western higher education institutions, with six of them based in the United States. The latest additions before this were Stanford, Tufts University, Berkeley, and George Washington University.
