Finnish President Alexander Stubb has approved amendments to the Atomic Energy Act that remove the ban on the import, storage and use of nuclear weapons on Finnish territory. The information was published on the Finnish government’s website.
According to the announcement, the changes will take effect on July 1. The Finnish parliament had approved the amendments earlier.
While the proposal was under consideration, the country’s defense minister described the move as “vital” for national security. At the same time, he stressed that Finland does not plan to station nuclear weapons on its territory in peacetime.
Moscow’s reaction
In April, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Finland’s plans to allow the import and storage of nuclear weapons amounted to “concentrated confrontation”.
The deployment of nuclear weapons in Finland would be regarded by the Kremlin as a direct threat, and Moscow, Peskov said, would be forced to take retaliatory measures.
Wider context
In January 2026, Finland withdrew from the Ottawa Convention, which bans the production, use and stockpiling of anti-personnel mines.
Earlier, in 2023, the country officially became the 31st member of NATO, ending its long-standing policy of military neutrality.
