Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham has died at the age of 71 after a “short and unexpected illness.” The Washington Post reported this, citing the senator’s office. No further details about the cause of death have yet been disclosed.
Graham was regarded as one of the harshest critics of the Russian authorities among American lawmakers. He repeatedly introduced bills calling for sanctions against Russia.
In February 2024, Russia’s financial monitoring agency added the senator to its list of “extremists and terrorists.” Graham had also consistently advocated a hard-line US foreign policy and stronger American armed forces.
The report says Graham is considered to have played a significant role in President Donald Trump’s decision to begin a war with Iran.
“Senator Lindsey Graham was one of the greatest people and senators I have ever known. He was always working and was a true American patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed,” Trump wrote on his Truth social network.
Ukrainian media also noted that on July 10, Graham visited Kyiv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
