Police officers came to politician Boris Nadezhdin, according to a post on his Telegram channel.
The post said security personnel were taking Nadezhdin to the police station in Dolgoprudny, a town in the Moscow region. No further details about the reasons for the detention were provided at the time.
On July 10, Russia’s Ministry of Justice added Nadezhdin to the register of “foreign agents”. The ministry said the decision was based on claims that the politician had spread what it described as “fake” information about decisions by the Russian authorities and the country’s electoral system, and had also called for participation in unauthorized rallies and pickets.
Nadezhdin is a member of the Council of Deputies of Dolgoprudny. In 1999, he was elected to the State Duma from the Union of Right Forces. He later joined the Right Cause party, and in 2021 ran for the State Duma from A Just Russia.
He also frequently appeared on political talk shows on федеральных television channels. In 2023, Nadezhdin announced that he would seek to run in the 2024 presidential election from the Civic Initiative party.
In the end, the Central Election Commission refused to register Boris Nadezhdin as a candidate.
