Politician Boris Nadezhdin was detained in Dolgoprudny, in the Moscow region. His lawyer, Dmitry Trunin, said police drew up a protocol against him under the article on displaying “extremist” symbols.
Nadezhdin himself reported the detention on his Telegram channel at 1:40 p.m. Moscow time. He said he was then taken to a police station in Dolgoprudny.
Trunin later said that at first the police department told him Nadezhdin was not among those detained. About 20 minutes later, however, the politician was located.
Nadezhdin soon published photographs of the protocol. The document says that on June 18 he posted on his Telegram channel a link to a YouTube stream during which a photograph of Alexey Navalny was shown. That is cited as the reason for drawing up the protocol.
According to the lawyer, Nadezhdin was then taken to the Dolgoprudny court.
If the court finds him guilty, he will be barred from taking part in elections for one year. Nadezhdin had planned to run for the State Duma. In addition, the Justice Ministry added him to the “foreign agents” register last week.
