Rosatom says Zaporizhzhia NPP chief engineer killed in drone attack

Aleksandr Yakovlev, the chief engineer of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, was killed in a Ukrainian drone strike, according to Rosatom chief Aleksei Likhachev.

Likhachev said the drone hit Yakovlev’s service car at the boundary between the plant’s industrial site and the city of Enerhodar. The driver was also killed in the attack.

“We expect the IAEA to respond promptly, specifically, and clearly to this tragedy. The country’s political leadership has been informed,” Likhachev said.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have not commented on the incident.

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been under Russian control since March 2022.
