On July 15, the Czech Republic extradited to Germany Marla Svenja Liebich, a German transgender neo-Nazi who had previously evaded a prison sentence. After the transfer, she was placed in a women’s prison in Chemnitz, although no final decision has yet been made on whether she will serve her term in a women’s or a men’s facility. DW reported this.
Marla Svenja Liebich, known before changing her gender marker as Sven Liebich, had long been active in the far-right scene in the city of Halle in Saxony-Anhalt. She repeatedly made homophobic and transphobic statements. In 2022, she described participants in Halle’s LGBTQ pride event as “parasites of society,” and in 2023 she spoke of what she claimed was “trans-fascism.”
In 2023, a court in Halle sentenced Liebich to 18 months in prison for incitement to hatred and defamation. It was the first actual prison term imposed on her. In August 2025, she was due to report to a women’s prison to begin serving the sentence, but fled instead. She was detained in the Czech Republic in April 2026.
Liebich changed the gender marker in her documents in late 2024, shortly after a German law took effect allowing such a change on the basis of a declaration at the registry office. Previously, the process required medical assessments and a court ruling.
According to the report, Liebich’s transition was widely viewed in Germany as a provocation, prompting debate over possible loopholes in the new law. MDR reported that in December 2025, officials in Saxony-Anhalt went to court seeking to reverse the change of Liebich’s gender marker. The broadcaster also said Liebich had allegedly planned to change her gender once again to “other” and adopt the name Anne Frank.
