Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov is set to leave his post, according to Verkhovna Rada deputies Olha Vasylevska-Smahliuk and Yaroslav Zhelezniak. They said Ihor Klymenko may be offered the job of heading the ministry.
There has been no official announcement of Fedorov’s resignation so far. However, the minister effectively confirmed his departure in a social media post.
“It was a great honor to serve the Ukrainian people as defense minister.”
A source cited by RBC-Ukraine said that during a meeting with lawmakers from the Servant of the People faction, Ukraine’s president named two reasons for dismissing Fedorov. According to the source, they were differences with Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi over the war and a lack of coordination on state procurement with the General Staff.
On July 14, the Verkhovna Rada accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko. A new cabinet lineup is expected to be announced on Thursday, July 16.
Ukrainian media describe Naftogaz chief Serhiy Koretskyi as the leading candidate for prime minister. Fedorov had served as defense minister since January 2026.
