The first push-button street landline phone has been installed on Teatralnaya Square in Yevpatoria, according to the administration of the annexed city.
Russian authorities said residents can use the device to contact emergency services free of charge. The administration stressed that such a phone is especially important when mobile communications are disrupted.
“The presence of a landline phone is especially important during disruptions in mobile communications,” the Russian authorities said.
In addition to Yevpatoria, five similar devices have been installed in Dzhankoi. Earlier, local officials said mobile service in the city would operate for eight hours a day, but that information was later deleted.
Before that, Russian-installed authorities in Crimea said that so-called “emergency call points” would appear in areas with unstable cellular coverage.
Alongside the installation of landline phones, the authorities also plan to increase the number of cell towers able to operate on generators.
