The Meshchansky District Court of Moscow has sentenced 67-year-old Larisa Shulman, the sister-in-law of political scientist Yekaterina Shulman. Judge Varvara Oganova gave her five years in prison in an embezzlement case under Parts 3 and 4 of Article 160 of the Russian Criminal Code, according to a Mediazona correspondent in the courtroom.
In addition to the prison term, the court barred Shulman from managing apartment buildings for three years.
The prosecution had asked for a harsher sentence. Prosecutor Yekaterina Chepi-Ipa requested eight years in prison and a fine of 900,000 rubles. The outlet notes that the same prosecutor had previously sought a sentence for Yekaterina Shulman in an “foreign agent” case.
According to TASS, the prosecution said Larisa Shulman embezzled about 3.7 million rubles from the account of the homeowners’ association “Rozhdestvensky Boulevard Building 10/7”, which she headed. Investigators believe the money was used to pay for repairs in buildings owned by her brother, literary scholar Mikhail Shulman.
During the trial, two payments from the association’s account were identified: roughly 928,000 rubles and 2.8 million rubles. According to the prosecution, these transfers were made under contracts for work at properties unrelated to the association’s activities.
TASS reported that Shulman did not admit guilt, although she acknowledged that she alone had access to the association’s bank-client system and mobile banking. She has been in custody since March 2025.
The report also recalls that in 2012, Mikhail Shulman was assaulted by three unidentified men. His relatives believed the attack was connected to his work as chairman of the homeowners’ association, where he had spent several years fighting to protect the building’s property.
