Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared plans to establish a "buffer security zone" along the Russia-Ukraine border, as reported by journalist Pavel Zarubin.

During a government meeting, Putin stated: "We've already announced the decision to form this essential security buffer zone along our border. Our military forces are currently implementing this plan by actively neutralizing enemy firing positions - the operation is ongoing."

The president provided no additional specifics about the initiative.
