Russian clients of Georgia's largest financial institution, Bank of Georgia (BoG), will face spending limits on high-end purchases exceeding 300 euros, according to an RBC report.
The news outlet reviewed an official bank communication informing customers that transactions above $300 or €300 at select international luxury retailers using BoG cards "will be restricted." The notice attributed these measures to compliance with global sanctions banning the export of premium goods exceeding this value to Russia.
A bank representative clarified that the policy reflects regulatory mandates rather than independent action by BoG, with implementation beginning May 21.
RBC highlights the significance of this development: "While luxury sanctions date back to 2022, this marks the first instance of bank-enforced compliance. Previously, retailers like Chanel attempted manual enforcement, but verifying Russian customers proved operationally challenging. BoG's system automates this process."
Financial commentator Nikolay Levshits noted these restrictions on luxury purchases existed previously, but specific guidelines have only recently been issued. He added: "The bank maintains normal cash withdrawal limits, meaning customers could theoretically withdraw substantial amounts to make cash payments where permitted."
Forbes observes that Russians have experienced sporadic difficulties when purchasing luxury items in cities like Rome, Nice, or Dubai, but these incidents were isolated.
