Armenian authorities have charged Samvel Karapetyan, billionaire owner of Russia's Tashir Group, with inciting government overthrow under Article 422 of Armenia's Criminal Code, according to Armenian News.am.

Karapetyan currently faces investigation but denies the allegations. On June 17, security forces raided his Yerevan residence, detaining multiple relatives and associates, though no official explanation was given for the operation.

Local reports suggest the crackdown relates to Karapetyan's backing of the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) and his opposition to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who has criticized both the AAC and its leader, Catholicos Garegin II. Pashinyan specifically accused the church head of breaking celibacy vows and improper conduct.

The following day, Pashinyan revealed plans to nationalize Electric Networks of Armenia CJSC—Karapetyan's monopoly power distribution company.

Born in Armenia but operating primarily through his Russia-registered Tashir Group, the 59-year-old tycoon saw his conglomerate generate over 260 billion rubles in 2024 (Forbes). His personal net worth stands at $3.2 billion.

Karapetyan holds strong AAC ties, including receiving the prestigious "godfather of the blessing of myrrh" title in 2024—one of the church's highest honors.
