Claude developer called for slowing AI development

Experts believe this step could help the company strengthen its position.

Anthropic, the creator of the Claude bot and one of the market leaders, has called for slowing the development of artificial intelligence because of the serious risks associated with the technology. This is stated on the company’s website.

Anthropic believes AI is advancing too quickly and may soon be able to improve itself without human involvement, which could lead to a loss of control over the technology. In the company’s view, a pause in development is needed to establish regulatory rules and give society time to adapt to the changes. At the same time, Anthropic argues that such a halt would make sense only if the largest market players take part and verification mechanisms are in place. The company plans to discuss the initiative with authorities and industry participants.

🔵 Is Anthropic being disingenuous? The Daily Telegraph writes that Anthropic recently became one of the most valuable companies in the AI sector. Against this backdrop, the call to “freeze” the race looks ambiguous: critics believe it could help the company cement the leadership it has already achieved.

Anthropic is now preparing for an IPO with a valuation of about $1 trillion. Against this backdrop, the company consistently presents itself as the most responsible AI developer, The Bell notes. At the same time, Anthropic itself continues to develop new models of its tools, including Claude and Mythos.

🔵 Context. In 2023, more than a thousand experts signed an open letter calling for a pause in the development of more advanced AI. Among the signatories were Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and Yuval Noah Harari.

Critics of the idea argued that such a halt would slow innovation, while participation by American companies would give an advantage to other countries, primarily China.
