On June 20, Spartak Moscow footballer Quincy Promes was transferred from Dubai to the Netherlands, where he faces a seven-and-a-half-year prison sentence imposed in 2024 for assault and drug trafficking offenses. Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported the extradition, citing Dubai authorities.

The UAE police previously arrested the athlete at his residence. Following his transport to the Netherlands via private aircraft, Promes will be held in a detention facility.

An Amsterdam court had earlier convicted Promes in February 2024, sentencing him in absentia to six years imprisonment for cocaine trafficking. The footballer was training with Spartak in the UAE when the verdict was issued, which subsequently prevented his departure from the country.

Investigators allege Promes was involved in smuggling 1,350 kg of cocaine through Antwerp port. Court documents indicate his participation in two drug shipments from Brazil in January 2020, one of which was seized by customs. The narcotics were concealed within sea salt containers aboard a cargo vessel.

In a separate 2023 ruling, Dutch judges sentenced Promes to eighteen months for assault. The conviction stemmed from a 2020 incident where he allegedly stabbed his cousin during a family gathering, reportedly over suspicions about a stolen necklace. The player maintained his innocence throughout proceedings.

The Dutch national previously played for Ajax Amsterdam during the 2020 season, helping the club win the Eredivisie title in 2020/2021. Promes has had two stints with Spartak Moscow - from 2014 to 2018, and again starting in 2021.
