European Union to consider revoking Hungary's voting privileges

By boriskov · Published on May 23, 2025

The EU Council will convene on May 27 to discuss potentially invoking Article 7 of the EU Treaty against Hungary, a measure that could strip voting rights from nations found to persistently breach European Union principles. This information appears on the official website of the governing body.

According to the announcement, "This will mark the eighth ministerial hearing concerning Hungary under the Article 7 process."

Meduza reports that while the proceedings against Hungary officially began in 2018, the matter hasn't been addressed since 2020. Article 7 provisions enable the EU to restrict certain membership privileges when a nation consistently fails to uphold core EU values, with the most severe consequence being the revocation of voting rights within the union.
