On January 7, 2026, an officer of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot and killed 37-year-old American citizen Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. The incident happened at about 10:25 a.m. on a snowy street near the site where George Floyd was killed in 2020, amid protests against federal actions.
According to CNN and the Associated Press, Good was inside her vehicle when officers approached the SUV, which was parked across the road, and ordered her to get out. One of them pulled at the car door. The vehicle then slowly moved backward and then forward. An ICE officer standing in front of the car stepped back, drew his gun, and fired. The vehicle then struck a parked car and a pole, after which emergency medical help was called.
At the same time, CNN and AP noted that the video footage does not conclusively show what happened immediately before the shooting or whether the car's movement was an intentional attempt to run someone over. A witness quoted by The New York Times said he saw an agent trying to open the SUV door while another shouted, “Stop!” before shots were fired.
The US Department of Homeland Security said the officers were carrying out “targeted operations” and that Good allegedly used her vehicle as a weapon and tried to hit officers. Secretary Kristi Noem and Donald Trump publicly backed the claim of self-defense. JD Vance also defended ICE personnel.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, by contrast, said the self-defense narrative was “complete nonsense” and argued that the officer acted recklessly and exceeded his authority.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz called the federal statements a “propaganda machine” and promised a full and prompt investigation. Police Chief Brian O'Hara, describing the incident, did not say Good had tried to harm anyone, while Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson said the state and federal authorities would investigate jointly.
AP reported that this was at least the fifth death linked to the Trump administration's immigration campaign. Good, who described herself as a poet, writer, wife and mother, grew up in Colorado, graduated from Old Dominion University in 2020, and moved to Minnesota last year from Kansas City. After her death, large protests and vigils were held in Minneapolis and in other US cities, including New York, Seattle, Miami and New Orleans.
