Investigative journalists from "Schemes" have uncovered the identity of the physician responsible for abusing Ukrainian prisoners of war at penal colony No. 10 in Mordovia.

Former POWs interviewed by reporters described how 34-year-old doctor Ilya Sorokin subjected detainees to electric shocks, physical beatings, sexual humiliation, and deliberate denial of medical care. These brutal practices allegedly resulted in the death of Ukrainian soldier Volodymyr Yukhymenko, whose autopsy revealed pneumonia, multiple bone fractures, and severe internal bleeding.

"Schemes" reports that Sorokin had been employed in the colony's medical unit since 2018 before enlisting in the military in late 2024, adopting the call sign "Doctor." He is currently believed to serve in a logistics unit while maintaining contact with former colleagues from the Mordovian facility.

His employment was verified by MSCh-13's personnel department in response to inquiries from "Schemes."

Between June 2022 and April 2025, over 177 Ukrainian POWs were reportedly held in Mordovia's colony No. 10.

Torture and coercion against Ukrainian detainees have been documented in multiple Russian penal facilities. In a related case investigated by "Important Stories," the body of journalist Viktoriya Roshchyna—previously detained at FSB SIZO-2 in Taganrog—was returned to her family missing several organs.
