The Latvian State Security Service (SGB) has initiated criminal proceedings against Aleksejs Roslikovs, a parliamentarian and head of the Stability party, following his use of Russian during a Saeima session. LETA news agency received this information from the SGB's press office.
Authorities allege Roslikovs has supported Russian activities against Latvia and provoked ethnic hostility. The SGB noted they've previously held multiple cautionary discussions with the lawmaker about potential legal consequences.
One such warning occurred in February after Roslikovs posted on social media platform X, claiming Russian dominates in Riga and advising political rivals from "New Unity" and "National Assembly" to "pack their bags."
The current charges stem from his June 5 parliamentary speech opposing debate on the "Declaration on the criminal Russification of Latvia by the Soviet occupation regime and the prevention of its linguistic consequences."
From the parliamentary podium, Roslikovs stated: "Russian speakers stood alongside Latvians during the barricades. What's next for Russian speakers? Segregated zones? Laws banning Russian names for children?"
