Cambodia and Thailand have renewed accusations of cross-border shelling in disputed territories, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced both nations had agreed to pursue a ceasefire, according to Reuters.
Cambodian authorities claimed Thailand initiated hostilities this morning, alleging Thai military forces were amassing near the border. Thailand countered by stating its actions were defensive responses to Cambodian aggression.
The previous day, President Trump had held discussions with the prime ministers of both countries, stating they had committed to urgent talks aimed at establishing a truce.
Cambodia's prime minister confirmed the nation's acceptance of Trump's peace initiative, while Thailand expressed appreciation for the U.S. leader's involvement but rejected external mediation. "While we appreciate his [Trump's] concern, our position remains against third-party interference," Thailand's acting prime minister stated.
