Russia has blocked access to Speedtest, the internet speed measurement tool operated by U.S.-based Ookla. According to reports from Interfax and Kommersant citing Roskomnadzor (Russia's communications watchdog), the restriction was implemented after authorities detected potential risks to the security of the country's telecommunications infrastructure and its domestic internet segment.
The regulator has recommended that users switch to ProNet, a Russian-developed alternative created by Roskomnadzor-affiliated entities a year earlier.
Earlier, in October 2024, Izvestia had reported, citing Roskomnadzor, that Speedtest faced possible restrictions if it was deemed to endanger the stability, security, or integrity of Russia's internet. The proposal to prohibit Russian telecom operators from using the service later gained backing from both the State Duma and the Federal Security Service (FSB).
