Russia has formally acknowledged the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan as the legitimate government. Zamir Kabulov, the Russian President's special representative for Afghanistan, made this announcement in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The Russian Foreign Ministry separately verified this development to TASS news agency. In a symbolic move, the Taliban's flag was hoisted at Afghanistan's embassy in Moscow, marking the first such occurrence.
