President Donald Trump revealed plans to raise tariffs on imported steel from 25% to 50% during his visit to US Steel's Pennsylvania facility. The American leader stated this measure would "bolster the domestic steel industry" while decreasing reliance on Chinese imports, with the new rates becoming effective June 4.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared: "Our steel and aluminum sectors are experiencing unprecedented growth. This will deliver tremendous benefits for our outstanding steel and aluminum workforce."
The announcement follows a May 28 ruling by the U.S. Court of International Trade, which deemed portions of Trump's earlier global trade tariffs—implemented in April—unlawful. The court determined the president lacked unilateral authority to impose such measures. The Trump administration has since appealed the decision.
