The Kirishinefteorgsintez refinery, or KINEF, in Russia’s Leningrad region halted operations after an overnight Ukrainian drone attack. Reuters reported this, citing two industry sources.
According to the sources, the strike damaged three of the refinery’s four primary oil-processing units. They said they could not yet estimate how long repairs would take or when the plant might resume normal operations.
An analysis published by ASTRA indicated that KINEF was indeed hit. According to that assessment, a fire broke out at the facility.
On the morning of May 5, 2026, Leningrad region governor Aleksandr Drozdenko confirmed that drones had attacked KINEF. He did not disclose the consequences of the strike and only said that no one was injured. Emergency services and Russia’s federal authorities did not publicly comment on the attack.
The Security Service of Ukraine, or SBU, said the strike on the refinery in Kirishi had been successful. The agency also said an oil pumping station was hit and that a fire was still burning at the site.
KINEF is considered Russia’s second-largest oil refinery after the Omsk refinery. Its processing capacity is estimated at about 17 to 19 million tons of oil per year. The Kirishi oil pumping station is described as one of the key facilities supporting export shipments of oil and petroleum products through the port of Primorsk.
